IG - Service Technician (1st shift) - Lyman, SC

The position involves in-house and field service and repair work of SEW Industrial Gears products range, the main focus of the position is the service and repair of power transmission components, primarily reducers to SEW Factory Standards, typically by performing inspections, parts cleaning and preparation, parts pulling, assembly, testing, painting and general clean up as well as working on electric instruments and motors.

Experience and Educational Requirements

  • Mechanical Technical Degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in Service / Maintenance.

Actual Tasks

  • Service & Commissioning:
  • Meet U.S. sales and service requirements as established by management and grow the market for IG products.
  • Perform and / or coordinate service on SEW-EURODRIVE IG products on site and in the field.
  • Perform start-up / commissioning in the field when needed.
  • Travel to visit customer sites to conduct service calls and comply with all customer required safety training and screening, including drug screens.
  • Technical Reports:
  • Perform technical reports on inspected and / or repaired gear units and components.
  • Repair Work:
  • Perform repair and assembly work within the Industrial Gear Assembly and Service Plant.
  • Perform other duties within the Industrial Gear Assembly and Service Plant.
  • Occasionally perform testing of Electric Motors and/or Control Instrumentation e.g.: pressure, flow, temperature instruments.
  • Other Activities:
  • Follow safety rules for lockout–tag out, safety glasses, etc. as required by OSHA in SEW–EURODRIVE facilities as well as customer’s facilities.
  • Complete required documentation completely, promptly and accurately.
  • Obtain and maintain a working knowledge of SEW–EURODRIVE, Inc.’s entire product line and other Industrial Gear products.
  • Maintain a businesslike and professional relationship with customers and associates.
  • Follow all Company guidelines, rules, and procedures.
  • Required to travel on Company business to any required destination domestically as well as overseas. May be required to stay overnight for extended periods of time, obtain lodging, and occasionally conduct business in the evenings, weekends, and holidays and outside of normal business hours.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License and driving record satisfactory to SEW-EURODRIVE or otherwise be able to transport yourself to and from various locations, including customer facilities, to engage in diverse business activities.
  • Must comply with all current ISO Quality and Work Instructions for job, all Company Safety rules, and all other Company rules, policies and procedures.
  • Assess each situation and do not perform any tasks which s/he feels is unsafe, on which s/he has not received training, or engage in any unsafe work practices. Report any unsafe condition to his/her manager.
  • Read and understand supporting documentation for the work area.
  • Monitor the work area for cleanliness.
  • Rotate to various jobs within Assembly Shop.
  • Perform other tasks as requested.

  • Ability to perform all tasks listed above to the Company’s expectations.
  • Must be currently eligible and authorized to work in the United States on an ongoing indefinite basis.
  • Must be able to continuously meet the Company’s production requirements.

  • Must have mechanical aptitude required to assemble gear drives and motors.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Ability to use gauges and other measuring equipment to ensure quality work.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to perform physical activity associated with operation of equipment including bending, twisting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and reaching in order to meet production needs.
  • Ability to work in various customer production environments, i.e., mining, automotive, amusement parks, food and beverage plants etc.
  • Must be able to stand and move continuously during working hours.
  • Must be able to repetitively lift up to 30 lbs. and occasionally lift up to 50lbs.
  • Essential to be adept at handling heavy equipment (up to 50 tons) with the aid of lifting devices.
  • Essential to be experienced with rigging.
  • Ability to operate various test instruments, i.e., multimeters, oscilloscopes
  • Must have experience with welding and cutting.
  • Must be able to operate a forklift
  • Must have experience with hydraulic tools and presses.
  • Mechanical Technical Degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in Service / Maintenance.
  • Must be able to occasionally sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, push and pull, bend, twist, stoop, and kneel.
  • Ability to organize workload for timely accomplishment of work.
  • Ability to read and understand parts lists, catalogs, price books, general factory instructions and other technical documents.
  • Must exhibit good logical technical knowledge.
  • Always be businesslike and professional to fellow employees, customers, suppliers, or people who work on behalf of the Company. Environmental

  • Ability to work within SEW-EURODRIVE production environment, as well as customer sites, with exposure to all kinds of oils, and various chemicals (complete list available upon request).
  • Work in Industrial Gear Assembly and Service Plant in Wellford SC.
  • Remain continuously within the normal work area, except for formal break times.
  • Position requires regular, predictable and punctual attendance and ability to work overtime as required, including weekends.
  • Normal work hours are 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Monday – Friday. When requested, must be able and willing to work other shifts.
  • Wear OSHA approved personal protective equipment (PPE) where required by Company policy or where necessary as dictated by safe practice.
  • Be available to conduct company business in the evening, on weekends and holidays outside normal business hours.
  • Be available for regular travel activities.
  • Ability to travel in various modes of transportation for extended periods of time including but not limited to an automobile or airplane.
